Is there a new King in the NBA?
Now this is not an argument that Kevin Durant is a better overall player than Lebron James because that is just not something that can be legitimately discussed at this point in time. However, in these NBA Finals alone Kevin Durant has proved to be the best player on the court even when being guarded by the reigning King.
Throughout the first two games Durant has looked nearly unstoppable, scoring at will and playing unbelievable defense in the process. The two best pure basketball players in the world are Lebron and KD, but there has not been a legitimate discussion as to who the better player is since Durant won the MVP and averaged 32 points per game in 2013-14.
Yes, Durant is on a team with arguably the best PG in the league Steph Curry, one of the best defensive bigs in the league, Draymond Green, and the sharpshooting Klay Thompson, who is a great wing defender. That is all added with one of the best benches in the league to equal up to the best team in the league.
That can’t be a reason as to why Durant can’t be considered the best player in the series. Remember Lebron is not alone on his team, he has one of the best point guards in the league on his side as well, a top tier offensive power forward in Kevin Love, and a very good center, Tristan Thompson.
They also have very good role players coming off the bench themselves. On paper they are simply not as good as the Warriors, which is why Golden State is favored to win the series, but it is not like both teams don’t have great players around their two best.
Kevin Durant is playing some of the best basketball he has in his career right now and he had an absolutely monstrous performance in game two. He scored 33 on 13-22 shooting along with 13 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, and 5 blocks. Durant was in a zone last night proving that he was the best player on the court for the second straight game, outplaying the King once again.
Durant is doing what all great players do, he is making those around him better because his talent makes others want to play at their level.
Don’t forget that last season Curry was hurt and did not show up offensively and was criticized heavily in large part because he was the best player on the team. This year he is showing up and playing to Chef Curry standards and that is because of how great Durant is. Everybody talks about how great players make those around them better and that is what Durant is doing for the already great Steph Curry.
Lebron is almost always the best player on the court, but if he gets outplayed by Durant two more times in this series Durant will have a valid case to take the crown from James whether you like it or not. I think Lebron is aware not only that the championship hopes are slipping but his old buddy is catching up to him quicker than he expected.
Imagine the storylines if Cleveland gets swept at home and Durant has better stat lines than the King in both of those games, or even if the Cavs get one but James is still outplayed by Durant. Oh man, that would be quite a story. I don’t think this one series can have Durant supplant Lebron as the best in the world for the future, but he is the best player at this moment. Will it continue? I don’t know but we will find out in the coming weeks.
Durant has outplayed Lebron in every facet the first two games, he is looking for the crown and might just take it this series.
